About Lab Accreditation
History of PT EDX Lab Accreditation
EDX Lab Accreditation for physical therapists began in 2015 with the formation of the Federation of Electrodiagnostic Laboratory Accreditation (FELA), a joint effort between APTA's Academy of Clinical Electrophysiology and Wound Management (ACEWM), The American Academy of Clinical Electrodiagnosis (AACE) and The American Congress on Electroneuromyography (ACE). Spearheaded by the selfless administrative works of Dr. Greg Ernst with the AACE and representative leaders from the ACEWM and ACE, a tripartite alliance was formed to recognize quality standards for physical therapist electrodiagnostic laboratories. Since its formation, many EDX laboratories have been recognized and are practicing with exemplary FELA accreditation.
In 2018, the ACE charter transferred its assets to the ACEWM and in 2024, AACE leadership transferred the assets and administration of FELA EDX laboratory accreditation to the ACEWM. The ACEWM is pleased to continue to provide a product acknowledging physical therapists as valuable, safe and cost effective providers of electrodiagnostic services through the laboratory accreditation process.
Value of EDX Lab Accreditation
Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Laboratory Accreditation Program is a voluntary, peer-review process that recognizes and accredits laboratories for achieving and maintaining the highest level of quality, performance, and integrity based on professional standards.
Obtaining laboratory accreditation shows patients, referral sources, potential residents and students, payors and the public that the laboratory meets the highest standards of quality and helps to prevent fraud and abuse by assuring only qualified providers are performing EDX.
- Demonstrates clinical excellence and competence
- Demonstrates the laboratories commitment to providing a safe and professional environment for patients
- Provides patients, payors and referral sources with credible measures to differentiate the quality of care
- Demonstrates to potential EDX trainees (residents, students) that the laboratory provides the highest quality environment to train
Should Payors Consider EDX Lab Accreditation
Payors require a process to assure quality and cost effective EDX testing. The ACEWM EDX Lab Accreditation Program assures that payments are made to providers that have appropriate training, are board certified and use modern appropriate equipment and testing procedures.
EDX Lab Accreditation ensures patient safety, the highest quality, cost effective testing and helps eliminate payments made for fraudulent services.
